Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium situated in the southeastern area of Wachirabenchathat Park (Rot Fai Park), covering an area of approximately 6 rai. The garden comprises an activity ground and exhibition area displaying beauty of various species of butterflies and insects. Objectives of this garden are to be nature classroom and learning source for children, youths, and the people who are interested in butterflies and insects as well as to be the place for study, research, data collection and compilation, and exchange of knowledge on life cycles and being of butterflies and insects, biodiversity, ecosystem relationship, and importance of plants that are food of caterpillars. Visitors will acquire knowledge as well as appreciate and be willing to conserve nature and environment. This is also the place for relaxation without spending more time and expenses to travel to other province to see butterflies.
The exhibition area of Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium consists of mini theatre showing video on insects and ecosystem, breeding and nursing room for butterfly and insect larvae (available only for group visitors) and a cage. The cage was built in the shape of a large dome with a height of 15 meters, using open framework and airy materials for good air ventilation. It displays over 500 butterflies of 20 species. Therefore, it is nature classroom ideal for learning, study, research, and compilation and exchange of knowledge on butterfly and insect breeding as well as life cycles and being of butterflies and insects.
The Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium is part of the project on non-formal education promotion of the BMA affiliated schools and part of “Chatuchak Learning Park” activity. Target area for learning activity is in the 3 connected public parks namely Chatuchak Park, H.M. Queen Sirikit Park, and Wachirabenchathat Park (Rot Fai Park). This is in line with section 25 of National Education Act B.E. 2542 (1999), specified that “public park” is one of the lifelong learning resources for people of all ages and genders without limited only in the classroom.
Address of the Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium is Kamphaeng Phet 3 Road, Chatuchak Sub-district, Chatuchak District, Bangkok. The garden is open daily on Tuesdays – Sundays and public holidays, except for Mondays, from 08.30 to 16.30 hrs. and the admission is free.
For group visit, please submit a letter to Director of Public Parks Office requesting for permission to visit the garden for about 5 – 7 working days in advance.
