Mr. Kriangyos Sudlabha, Deputy Governor of Bangkok; Phra Ratchaweti (Suraphon Chitayano por.tor.9), the Assistant Abbot of Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan (Temple of Dawn); and H.E. Mr. Joseph Anthony Cotter, Ambassador of Ireland to Thailand, and his spouse, Mrs. Marie Patricia Cotter, participated in the Global Greening Programme 2021 activity held at the Temple of Dawn, Bangkok Yai District, Bangkok, on the occasion of the National Day of Ireland (St. Patrick’s Day).

The Deputy Governor said that the National Day of Ireland, or the St. Patrick’s Day, was celebrated annually on 17 March. The BMA took part in this celebration by joining the Global Greening Programme 2021 in illuminating the Grand Pagoda of the Temple of Dawn in green light. The Temple of Dawn is one of the most beautiful landmarks in Bangkok and the icon of the Thai tourism industry. The Grand Pagoda would bathe in emerald light during 19.00 – 22.00 hrs. In the year 2021, the BMA joined this Programme for the second time at the Grand Pagoda of the Temple of Dawn together with other places and buildings around Bangkok, namely, the Thailand Cultural Centre, Conrad Hotel, 208 Wireless Road Building (home of the Irish Embassy), and All Seasons Place, among others. Participation in the Global Greening Programme 2021 aims to publicize Thailand’s positive image to the foreigners and global communities, and to create friendly ties between Bangkok and other countries through foreign embassies and communities based in Bangkok. This will enhance and create opportunity for cooperation in sustainable urban development in the future.

Ireland has initiated the Global Greening Programme since 2010. The objective is to promote Ireland at the global level by inviting various cities around the world to illuminate their famous buildings and landmarks with green light, which is the national color of Ireland, in order to celebrate the National Day of Ireland, or the St. Patrick’s Day. The world-famous buildings and landmarks in other countries participated in this year Programme include Sydney Opera House in Australia, the London Eye in the United Kingdom, and the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, Niagara Falls in the United States of America, etc.
