Opening of Chaloem Phrakiat Aquarium Building and Landscape Development and Improvement of Rama IX Lake Making Merit for King Rama IX
Chaloem Phrakiat Aquarium Building, Rama IX Lake, Huai Khwang District: Pol.Gen. Aswin Kwanmuang, Governor of Bangkok, presided over the building sign unveiling ceremony of the Chaloem Phrakiat Aquarium Building marking the auspicious occasion of the Birthday Anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great. The executives of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), Drainage and Sewerage Department, Environment Department, Public Works Department, Traffic and Transport Department, Urban Planning and Development Department, Huai Khwang District Office, Department of Fisheries, the Crown Property Bureau, related sections, and the general public also participated in this ceremony.
In 1990, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great initiated the project, performed by the BMA, to rehabilitate and improve the quality of water in Lat Phrao Canal by bringing water from Lat Phrao Canal to have a water treatment test at Rama IX Lake using wastewater treatment system called aerated lagoon before discharging into Lat Phrao Canal and Chao Phraya River. His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great also permitted the BMA to use 53 rais of land of the Crown Property Bureau, located at Lat Phrao Canal in Huai Khwang District, for the construction of Rama IX Lake Water Treatment Facility which was later changed to “Rama IX Water Quality Control Plant”. The plant provides treatment service for wastewater from Lat Phrao Canal and 500 houses located around Rama IX Lake with the treatment capacity of 86,400 cubic meters per day.
Moreover, the area surrounding Rama IX Lake has been adjusted to become a botanical garden, a place for recreational activities and exercise, and Rama IX Lake Aquarium. The aquarium has provided service for more than 10 years; therefore, its building become old and damaged. In addition, plants around Rama IX Lake became overgrown and messy resulted in unsightly scenery and disordered environment.
The BMA therefore implemented the project on renovating the Chaloem Phrakiat Aquarium Building as well as developing and improving landscape of Rama IX Lake as merit-making activities on the occasion of the Birthday Anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great, December 5, 2020. The Department of Fisheries also provides 7 species of freshwater fish in 6 fish tanks that related to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great for displaying at Chaloem Phrakiat Aquarium Building. Private sector also provided support in renovation of the Chaloem Phrakiat Aquarium Building and the organization of the exhibition honoring His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great with the theme of the royal duties in the field of wastewater treatment and flood prevention of Bangkok celebrating the Sixtieth Anniversary Celebrations of His Majesty’s Accession to the Throne. It is expected that the public can benefit from the treated water in the Lake and use the Lake as the area for recreational activities and exercise.
The BMA invites everyone to visit the exhibition on Thailand’s freshwater fish and wastewater treatment procedure of Rama IX Water Quality Control Plant on government working days and hours.
