Sopon Pisuttiwong, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, revealed after having site visit to inspect the arrangement and sale of gift baskets for New Year 2021 that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) places importance on providing good services to the people including consumer protection to safeguard consumers against unfair practices in the marketplace from buying goods and services during New Year 2021. The BMA and business operators have campaigned for the quality arrangement and sale of gift baskets for New Year 2021 so that the public can choose and buy gift basket for New Year 2021 at a reasonable price with good standard.
New Year gift basket must have a label listing types of goods in the basket, expiry date, logo of department store or company, and date that the buyers can change or return the product if they do not satisfy with the product listed on the label. At any rate, it must comply with terms and conditions of each company. Other specifications for the gift baskets should be in accordance with the following 5 types of gift baskets, namely 1) Food gift basket must comprise good quality food products with logo certified by the Food and Drug Administration and food product must have the expiry date after 31 May 2021 so that the consumers have enough time to consume the food products in the gift basket; 2) Fruit and vegetable gift basket must have a shelf life of no longer than 3 days; 3) Area selling community and local product gift baskets must have a signboard written: “Community and Local Product”; 4) Alternative gift baskets such as wellness gift basket and Thai dessert gift basket must use product with good quality; and 5) Gift basket that contains alcohol must not be on sale or on display. The sale of gift basket containing alcohol drinks can be done only when the buyer chooses to buy alcohol and ask the shopkeeper to pack into the gift basket. It must not be an arrangement waiting to be distributed. It must not be in the form of leaflet, list, and brochure advertising the product or any actions that advertising gift basket that contains alcohol drinks. Any person violates this shall be liable to a fine not exceeding thirty thousand Baht according to the Food Act, B.E. 2522 (1979).
