Pol.Gen. Aswin Kwanmuang, Governor of Bangkok, chaired the meeting of executives of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), discussing on the 2021 Chinese New Year celebrations which falls on Friday, February 12th, 2021. Chinese New Year is the festival that Thai-Chinese people celebrate the beginning of a new year on the Chinese lunar calendar. During the festivities, there will be rituals to worship gods and deities, ancestors, and sacred things by burning candles and incense as well as gold and silver paper, and lighting firecrackers and fireworks. These rituals, if done carelessly, can cause danger and fires which lead to extensive loss of life and property.

The meeting resolved to strongly advise district offices and related BMA organizations to inform and warn the people to be careful while performing rituals to worship gods and deities, ancestors, and sacred things. Especially when burning candles, incense and gold and silver paper, non-combustible and strong holders must be placed on a stable and heat-resistant surface. A fire that burn candles, incense and gold and silver paper must be safely put out before sleep/going to bed or leaving the house. Lighting of firecrackers and fireworks during Chinese New Year must be done outdoor. All cables, plugs and sockets, and home electric appliances must be regularly checked to ensure that they are in good condition. If something is damaged and needs fixing or changing, do it immediately.

Electric appliances must be switched off and unplugged every time when not in use. Automatic circuit breaker must be installed, and a ground wire must be placed to give excess electrical charges a safe place to go. After finished cooking, the cylinder valve must always be closed, and the LP Gas appliance must be turned off. Each home must have fire prevention equipment and fire extinguishers and everyone who live in the house must learn how to use the equipment. In case of fires, call hotline 199. The hotline is available 24 hours a day.
