At present, tens of thousands of passengers use boat service in Saen Saep Canal, operated from Phan Fa Lilat Bridge Pier in Pom Prap Sattru Phai District to Si Bun Rueang Temple Pier in Bang Kapi District. Therefore, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) plans to extend passenger boat service route in Saen Saep Canal so that the people can travel further to Min Buri District. This aims to provide more alternatives and facilitate convenient travel as well as improve traffic congestion problem in the above-mentioned areas. Consequently, the BMA prepares to provide the extension of electric passenger boat service in Saen Saep Canal, starting from Si Bun Rueang Temple Pier to Min Buri District Office Pier, totaling 11 kilometers.
All the 12 piers used in passengers boat service route which will be renovated includes: 1. Si Bun Rueang Temple Pier, connecting point between passenger boats operated by private sector and those operated by the BMA; 2. The Paseo Mall Pier; 3. Eight piers constructed by the BMA in order to provide seamless and continuing service along the route (currently under construction), namely Phrom Mit School Pier, Seri Thai 26 Pier, Rahat Canal Pier, Muban Rom Sai Pier, Surao Daeng (Red Mosque) Pier, Lo Lae Yai Community Pier, Min Buri Market Pier, and Min Buri District Office Pier; and two transit/transfer piers at Bang Chan Water Gate. In terms of passenger boat service management, the BMA will hire passenger boat service provider to operate along the Si Bun Rueang Temple – Min Buri District Office route.
12 environmentally friendly electric passenger boats will be provided for service. These electric-powered boats operate noiselessly, do not release exhaust fumes into the canal, do not generate waves disturbing the houses along the canal, produce zero pollutions, and do not create combustion of diesel oil which causes global warming. Each boat can accommodate 40 passengers and 2 passengers with wheelchair together with 2 bicycle hangers for those who use bicycles in commuting. The electric passenger boat service operates daily on Mondays – Fridays from 05.30 to 20.30 hrs., and on official holidays from 06.00 to 19.00 hrs. At the first stage, trial service will be offered at 2 – 3 piers to evaluate public satisfaction and need. After that, the service will be provided at all piers. The boat service is free of charge during its 6–month trial run. After that, the fare will be collected at the rate of 15 – 20 Baht for a whole route. The trial service is expected to be launched at the end of August 2021.
